SHADING ELEMENTS AND SCREENS

Shading Elements and Screens / Mashrabiyas

There are many reasons to incorporate shading elements and screens into commercial and residential projects. They not only serve several practical purposes, they can greatly improve the overall aesthetic of your building.

BFG Architecture produces a wide array of beautiful structural and decorative screens, lattice work, and shading elements using GRC, UHPC, and FRP. Due to the versatility of these materials, we can create complex shapes, curvatures, and textures not possible with traditional choices. In addition, the screens or shading elements are prefabricated and easily installed onsite, allowing for quicker construction.

Lattice panels and Mashrabiyas are a popular choice when it comes to shading. Their design provides a decorative element and sense of privacy while still allowing natural light in, which makes them ideal to add to windows as a form of screening. When made using composite materials, many patterns and formats can be achieved, from geometric to organic.

Fixed exterior shading elements such as overhangs are another practical option. When made using composite materials they are resistant to adverse weather conditions (UV radiation or acid rain), ecological aspects (fully recyclable), and are easily maintained. Further, they come in a wide variety of finishes that mimic natural materials.

GRC, UHPC, and FRP each have unique benefits but they all reduce overall project costs, help you eliminate most secondary aluminium framing and mechanical fasteners, allow architects to create designs that are impossible or impractical with traditional materials, improve thermal performance and energy efficiency, and meet building code requirements.

BFG Architecture’s highly experienced team of experts will be able to help you choose the best material for your project based on your budgetary, aesthetic, and functional requirements.
